Critical fluid
technology uses the powerful solvent properties of gases compressed to
their critical point.
Each substance has a unique critical point, defined by the temperature
and pressure at which the liquid and vapor phases become identical.
Critical fluids have a useful combination of liquid-like density and solvency,
and gas-like viscosity, diffusivity, compressibility and lack of surface
tension. These fluids
rapidly penetrate substrates and dissolve a wide range of chemicals.
Furthermore, the critical region is characterized by an ability to
control solvent power with only minor changes in temperature and pressure.
Based on these properties, a number of practical, state-of-the-art
industrial processes have been developed.
